Meadowlands development continues

The first stage of the exciting Meadowlands development at the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens commenced in July. A planned 10 year phase by phase development of key infrastructure and gardens will be undertaken in the ‘Meadowlands sector’ – the Alexandra Street side of the Lagoons. A ex-sugar cane paddock will be transformed and will feature solely plants from the Mackay/Whitsunday region – many threatened with extinction in the wild.

What will be happening now?

The first phase of development is complete, including:

• earthworks required to form the Meadowlands carpark – located on the corner of Alexandra Street and Crowleys Road. This is a 200 bay carpark that will complement the Outdoor Performance and Events Centre - a stage and amphitheatre to be constructed on the lower lagoon flat opposite the Gardens’ Visitors Centre.
• Formation of key internal access roads and pathways associated with the carpark and Outdoor Performance and Events Centre

Commencing late 2011/early 2012:

• Phase one tree plantings - a joint project of the botanic gardens and by Mackay Host Lions Club, to replace weed tree species removed and provide habitat for wildlife
• the first phase of the amphitheatre and performance stage

For residents who walk or cycle in the Gardens – please observe all works signage and directions from construction staff and for short periods – access may be limited to the site and the causeway that crosses the lagoons. Do not enter any areas fenced off for your safety and if you have children – please direct them to stay away from fenced off areas. Please be aware that there will be an increase in traffic – particularly trucks – using Alexandra Street during construction.
