Choose a new fitness path

With most residents' New Year's fitness resolutions now well underway, it can be easy to lose motivation if you're running along the same path each day.

Parks and Environment portfolio councillor Theresa Morgan is encouraging residents to consider using the region's parks and natural environment for exercise.

"The Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens is an excellent location for fitness-related activities," she said.

"The scenic lagoons make the perfect backdrop for a walk, run or cycle along the award-winning Bluewater Trail."

The 21km track runs directly through the botanic gardens, allowing residents to take in the beautiful scenery and learn more about the plants native to the region.

One of Mackay's popular 10,000 step trails is also available at the botanic gardens, which encourages residents to track how many steps they've taken.

Cr Morgan said the after-hours path lighting was a major advantage of using the botanic gardens as an exercise route.

"The lighting allows residents to make the most of the cooler times of day for exercise, including the early morning and evening."

"There are also groups that run boot camps at the gardens that are very popular among those who enjoy group fitness," she said.

The Lagoon's Café & Gallery is now open and serves a range of affordable beverages and snacks for those who want to purchase a refreshment before or after their work out.

Other ideas for getting fit around the region include:
