Bird Life exhibition

Birdlife Mackay is back to showcase more of our local birdlife in their second exhibition in the Lagoons Gallery from Tuesday, December 1, 2020 until Sunday, January 24, 2021.

.

Birdlife Mackay has been observing, recording and raising awareness of the vast range of fascinating and in some cases, unique birds in the Mackay District for 30 years. Previously known as the Mackay Bird Observers Club, the name was changed in 2012 to align with the national body, Birdlife Australia.

Monthly club outings are held on the first weekend of each month, on either the Saturday or Sunday morning, and a mid-week outing is held on the third Thursday of each month. These are fun days, where old hands and those new to birding can see and learn more about the local birds. The data we collect is added to the Australia-wide database used by scientists to study changes to bird populations.

On the last Friday of each month, passionate and enthusiastic volunteers from Birdlife Mackay conduct a structured survey of the birds in the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens. We have collected a record of the changes to the abundance and range of species on the water and in the bushes in the Gardens for over thirteen years.

The theme for this year’s exhibition is “Waterbirds”, including familiar wetland birds and migratory shorebirds. The photos have been contributed by some of the keen Birdlife Mackay photographers, and the group thank them for the hours spent getting the ‘right’ shot.

Birdlife Mackay outings are open to anyone interested in a pleasant walk in the bush with good company and, along the way, seeing a few birds.
