'Wave Harp' features in the Botanic Gardens

A new art installation 'Wave Harp' is now on show in the Finch Hatton Gorge waterway fountain pool and waterfall at the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens

"Wave Harp" was a finalist in the STRAND Ephemera Townsville - The North's Sculpture Festival

'Wave Harp' is constructed from individually cut and crafted stems from a bamboo forest at Finch Hatton.

The installation was planned as a collaboration between Jenni Hanna and Lesley Kane as part of Cultivating Consciousness, an exhibition recently on show at the Botanic Gardens' Lagoons Gallery

It is constructed from a variety of different species of bamboo sliced into rings and joined together with fine wire and supported with metal.

The circles of bamboo should be interpreted in the context of the fragility of nature and the environment which was endorsed when it was found that as the bamboo aged it became brittle and often split apart.

This necessitated many and frequent changes to the structure as the team worked towards a deadline.

Neil Brookes became an invaluable part of the team when the physical and practical complexities became more important.

Wave Harp was recently selected as part of Strand Ephemera 2015.  The team was proud to be one of 30 successful applicants who came from as far away as New Zealand, China and interstate.

Lesley Kane stated of the work "Potent combinations of art, music and history inspired this work alluding to breaking waves, pulsating ocean rhythms and the mystery surrounding the historical voyage of the S.S. Yongala from Mackay.

'Wave Harp' is part of Cultivating Consciousness Exhibition by Lesley Kane and Jenni Hanna recently on show in the Lagoons Gallery.
