Plant a tree at the Lagoon Creek Wetlands

National Tree Day
Sunday, July 31 from 9am - 11am

Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens is hosting a National Tree Day activity at Lagoon Creek Wetland, between Lansdowne Road and Glenella Connection Road.

This location is important because it connects The Lagoons with the Pioneer River. We are improving the condition and health of Lagoons Creek by:

  • Creating habitat and assisting native fish passage for species that migrate.
  • Introducing plants to filter out sediment and improving the quality of water flowing into the Pioneer River and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
  • Enhancing landscape and ecological values to provide a range of passive recreational and aesthetic benefits for the community.

Construction works are now complete. Stage one involved the construction of a fish way adjacent to the Bluewater Trail, which has already shown good evidence of fish migration in the early stages.

Stage two reshaped the grassed area between Glenella Connection and Lansdowne roads to create two wetland areas. It also included the construction of additional rock ramp fish ways to further improve fish passage.

The National Tree Day event will focus on the inclusion of more vegetation to increase habitat values and improve the visual aesthetics of the area.

Directions: This site connects the Lagoons in West Mackay with the Pioneer River. It extends North of the Lagoons between Lansdowne Road and Glenella Connection Road.
