Have your say on the blooming future of our botanic gardens

Help shape our region’s flourishing botanic gardens and have your say on its future development.

Opened in 2003, Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens (MRBG) in Lagoon Street, West Mackay, is currently in the second stage of a 10-step masterplan of development that will be executed over a 17-year period.

Engineering Services director Stuart Holley said the venue was an important community facility that attracted hundreds of visitors every week.

“Featuring threatened and special plants, the Botanic Gardens is a haven of flora from the Central Queensland coast bioregion, with Australian natives as well as exotics from similar climates around the world,” he said.

“With more than three kilometers of walking and cycling trails, a café and gallery, five cultural-themed gardens and a children’s play garden, there is already so much to see and do at the gardens, but we’re keen to hear what the community wants to see and what’s important to them.”

Mr Holley suggested ideas for stage three of the masterplan could include: improved parking, shading, plant identification and signage or new events, exhibitions and guided walks to be hosted by the venue.
