Each artist writes their impression of what ‘Frangipani Dawn’ means to them:

Sharon Duchene Drew…
"Frangipani Dawn depicts images from childhood memories growing up in Papua New Guinea. The dark mystery, smells, colours and textures linger and they are etched in memory.
The aim of these works is to appeal to the senses, to leave an impression of what it was like to grow up in a primitive / different culture and share the experience with the onlookers.

Heather Walker…
"I spent a large part of my early childhood years in my granddad’s nursery.
We had a cubby under a Quisqualis indica shrub. We made garlands, necklaces and bracelets from the flowers.
We did the same with Frangipani flowers.
Frangipani means shelter. The meaning is that I will protect you from evil. I supposed it worked when I was a kid; I only fell out of a tree once."

Brigitte Zimmermann…
"I was born in Switzerland. When I arrived in Cairns for the first time, I noticed the exotic flowers everywhere… the different smells and colours. I’d never seen a frangipani before. My first impression of Australia was like being welcomed by the Frangipani."
