Council and community working together for a shared botanical vision

A council/community Advisory Board has been formed to oversee future plans for Mackay's botanic gardens and assist the curator to consider botany, resident visitation and tourism, community development and involvement, sport and recreation access, arts and events.

Membership is made up of key council staff and members of affiliated groups for both planning for the botanic gardens as a significant project and linkages with the wilder community.

Chaired by Mackay Regional Council's Parks and Environment Portfolio Councillor Theresa Morgan, the primary role of the Advisory Board is to provide a forum for the local community and key council departments to input into the planning, design, development and ongoing management of the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens to ensure the facility offers relevance as a botanic garden and interest and attraction for residents and visitors.

Some key areas that the Advisory Board will consider:

  • The need to provide spaces and facilities for engagement with native flora and an understanding of the core roles of a botanic garden
  • Elements that sets the botanic gardens apart from others regional parks
  • What links the botanic gardens has to the Council wide community facilities network
  • Consideration for programming, funding, staffing and maintenance within council's plans and budgets.
