View this snapshot into Mackay’s past. An historic photographic series taken by William George Harvey (b. 1888 d. 1961) and Robert Christie Harvey (b. 1889 d. 1966). The brothers were born in Mackay, and were respected ornithologists. The Harvey brothers were dedicated to nature photography and produced a significant record of the wildlife and flora of the local area.
Landcare Day in the GardensWhen? Sunday August 31 from 10am (Birdwatchers walk commences at 7am) Where? Tropical Sun Garden Lawn, Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens Cost? FREE Discover how you can make a difference to our environment - whether it's planting native trees, learning about recycling and stormwater or how to go organic in your own backyard. Enjoy an early morning birdwatchers walk, or grab a guided gardens walk to discover the best native plants to feed and attract wildlife. Great displays and advice, children's activities and environmental art workshops. Some features of the day will be - Grab a copy of “Are your Garden plants going bush” brochure. This is an initiative of the Mackay Regional Pest Management Group.

FREE Step into spring and soak up the inspiring and entertaining cultural atmosphere at the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens on Sunday, 7 September with Global Grooves. Commencing at 7am with a citizenship ceremony, come along and tantalize your taste buds with multicultural cuisine and kick back and enjoy the entertainment on offer. fo te rest of the afternoon. From cultural dance and music to a range of creative workshops, this event has something to interest everyone! Enjoy a free train ride for the kids or just sit back and relax! Groove to funk-rock Melanesian sounds Yothu Yindi drummer Ben Hakalitz will deliver an extraordinary blend of Melanesian funk and jazz/rock as part of Tribe of Jubal. African dance band Musiki Manjaro, Mexican and Latin American performer Victor Valdes and the authentic Ethiopian Bahil dance group will also be performing. Multi-cultural cuisine will be available - take an Indian cooking class - and most of the activities anmd workshops are free. ABC Tropical North, Hail Creek Mine and Multicultural Arts Queensland support the Mackay Regional Council free event.
Catch the Mackay Explorer bus for a free ride to the Gardens.
Gardens Friends guided walk at Finch Hatton GorgeWhen? Saturday September 13 - meet at the Gorge carpark at 10am Where? Finch Hatton Gorge, 50 kms west of Mackay Come along and learn more about the beautiful rainforest flora of Finch Hatton Gorge, that you'll find also in our Finch Hatton Gorge Waterway Garden. Wear comfortable footwear and bring a water bottle. The walk will be followed by a BBQ picnic. Bring a plate of salad or dessert, chair and small table and relax! Contact RSVP Essential. Sunday in the Park
When? Sunday September 21 from 2pm - 4pm. Where? Tropical Sun Garden Lawn, Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens Cost? FREE Come along for this free concert. Bring a chair or picnic blanket - or if you'd like to join in - your musical intstrument! The Lagoons Cafe will be open until 4pm.
