Bird watching at the Gardens

Why not enjoy bird watching at one of Mackay's best areas - just 4 kms to the city centre?

The Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens offer a range of habitats - from the waterways and fringing grass and sedgelands of the lagoons, to adjacent gardens and small forested settings.

Watch Sunbirds dart amongst the flowers, view flocks of Magpie Geese roosting on the lagoon flats, Whistling Ducks feeding amongst the waterlilies - even enjoy the ubiquitous Kookaburras nesting each spring under the pink flowering Cassia in the Tropical Shade Garden.

The Mackay and Whitsunday Branch Bird Observers Club of Australia have produced a brochure called Birdwatching Around Mackay (PDF 578kb) that features information about bird species that can be seen in our area.

Do you know all the birds in the Botanic Gardens? Spend a morning or afternoon strolling through the Gardens and try to spot as many as you can! Download the activity sheet online (PDF 490 KB).
